The Perfection of the Moment wins @ MING!

Calgary AB. - Calgary based filmmaker Corey Lee's award-winning short film "The Perfection of the Moment" picked up another award as it won the grand prize at the 2007 MING Short Film Festival Gala held earlier this month.

Writer, Director and Co-Producer, Lee, who wrote and directed the 2003 feature film "Defining Edward", completed "The Perfection of the Moment" late in 2005. The film has since won a 2006 Alberta Film & Television Award for best short film after garnering seven nominations, and was a finalist for the 2006 Calgary International Film Festival's Alberta Centennial Award for excellence in short filmmaking. In March of this year the film received the Reel Canadian Indie Award from the Canadian Filmmakers Festival in Toronto. The film has screened at a number of highly regarded festivals including: Edmonton, Whistler and the touring Prairie Tales, and was invited to the Short Film Corner at the 2007 Festival de Cannes.

"The Perfection of the Moment" is the first in a trilogy of short films adapted from Canadian author, John Gould's 2003 Giller Prize nominated collection, Kilter: 55 Fictions. The film offers an unapologetic re-examination of one bad night, which unfolds as the narrator walks alone down a deserted city street, is threatened by drunks and called upon to question his own sexuality. The film stars Calgary actors Joel McNichol ("The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford") and Gillian Carfra ("Dawn Anna").

"The Perfection of the Moment" was produced with a Bravo!FACT grant, supported by Bravo! NewStyleArtsChannel, and was made possible by the generous support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, ACTRA Calgary, William F. White International, Panavision Calgary, joeMedia Group, Six Degrees and Studio Post.

A big thank you to all the fine folks at MING for putting this festival on and for their continued support and promotion of the art of short film. Thanks also to festival judges Darryl Solly, Eugene Stickland & Alan Cho. And congratulations to filmmakers Dave Teatro and Christopher Markowsky, who also took home awards.

Award winning Calgary Director premieres 2nd chapter of short film trilogy at CIFF & EIFF

Calgary AB. - Calgary filmmaker Corey Lee's short film "What You're Ready For", the 2nd chapter of his Kilter Trilogy, will be premiering on the big screen at both the upcoming Calgary and Edmonton International Film Festivals.

The film is adapted from the 2003 Giller Prize nominated collection Kilter: 55 Fictions, by John Gould. Based on the story of the same name, What You're Ready For deals with an emotionally devastated man who seeks truth in the words of the charismatic self-help guru who stole his wife. The film stars multiple Gemini Award winning actor Michael Riley ("Race to Mars", "This is Wonderland") and Stephen Park ("The Englishman's Boy", "Da Vinci's Inquest").

"There are so many great stories and wonderfully cinematic bits in John's (Gould) book, but "What You're Ready For" hit me pretty early on," says Lee, adding "There is just such an exacting and precise wrath wrapped up in the obsessive psychosis of the Narrator's ultra calm and sane exterior. And the collision course that he and Dr. Laird are on is so brilliantly laid out. It's a beautifully wry, tale of irrepressible emotions, similar to "The Perfection of the Moment" and yet very different. A perfect second chapter in this trilogy based on Gould's Kilter stories."

The trilogy's first chapter, "The Perfection of the Moment", won the 2006 Alberta Film and Television Award for Best Short Film after receiving a total of seven nominations, won the Reel Canadian Indie Award at the 2007 Canadian Filmmakers Festival in Toronto and went on to screen at a variety of festivals across the country.

At the Calgary International Film Festival, "What You're Ready For" screens as a finalist for the Alberta Centennial Award for excellence in short filmmaking at the Uptown Stage and Screen on Sunday, September 23 at 6:30pm. For tickets and information visit www.calgaryfilm.com.

As part of the Edmonton International Film Festival, the film will screen on Friday, October 5, first as part of the 'Lunchbox Shorts' series at Edmonton City Centre at 12:10pm, then again that evening at 7:00pm in the 'International Shorts' package at the Princess Theatre II. A filmmaker Q&A will follow the evening screening, where Lee will be in attendance. For tickets and information visit www.edmontonfilmfest.com.

"What You're Ready For" was made possible by the generous support of Bravo!FACT, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, ACTRA Calgary, Panavision Calgary, MTM, joeMedia Group, Six Degrees and Studio Post.
