Corey Lee - Writer / Director / Producer
Corey Lee is a multi-talented artist who has worked in many facets of filmmaking. He is known for his debut feature film, Defining Edward, a dark, edgy and vibrant story of one man's fight to unlock the truth about his own troubled past. The film premiered in Toronto at the 2003 ReelWorld Film Festival, was an official selection of the 2003 Calgary International Film Festival and aired across Western Canada on Corus Entertainment's Movie Central in 2004 and 2005.
In late 2005, Lee began working on a trilogy of short films to be produced through CTVglobemedia's Bravo!FACT program. The Kilter Trilogy connects three short films adapted from the 2003 Giller Prize nominated collection, Kilter: 55 fictions, by Canadian author, John Gould. The first film in the trilogy, The Perfection of the Moment, has won several awards, including the 2006 Alberta Film & Television Award for Best Short Film, the Reel Canadian Indie Award from the 2007 Canadian Filmmakers Festival in Toronto and the Grand Prize at the 2007 MING Short Film Festival. The film has screened at a number of highly regarded Canadian festivals including: Edmonton, Whistler and the 2007 edition of the touring Prairie Tales. It was invited to the Short Film Corner at the 2007 Festival de Cannes and recently chosen for the inaugural Moving Stories Film Tour.
What You're Ready For, is the second chapter in the trilogy, and stars renowned Canadian film and stage actor, Michael Riley. The film continues to appear at festivals and has won the Best Alberta Short Film at the 2007 Edmonton International Film Festival and the 2008 Alberta Film & Television Award for Best Short Film. It is currently screening as part of Prairie Tales 10, Metro Cinema's annual touring collection by Alberta filmmakers and media artists.
His latest film, In Translation, the final chapter in the kilter trilogy, is premiering on the festival circuit in the fall of 2008. The short format examination of the lonely world of large format adult filmmaking, ClimaXXX: a love story, will also appear in late 2008.
In addition to his dramatic work, Lee has directed and produced music videos for celebrated Western Canadian alt-folk hero, Lorrie Matheson, and the captivating singer-songwriter, Anita Athavale. He is also respected for his work as a picture editor, most recently on the Spring Street Films rockumentary, Rock Sparkle. He has many of his films archived in the Film and Broadcasting Section of the National Collection at Library and Archives Canada and is a regular instructor of screenwriting, directing and the filmmaking process at the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers.
Lee has various projects in development, including the feature films: Of Winds and Dragons, Fixer, Flypaper, Talk Show, All Things Not Forgotten and the western horror, Nian: the Beast.
